Understanding Misophonia Ireland · Independent information

Misophonia:
a starting point for conversation.

Helping people in Ireland understand misophonia and talk about it with greater confidence and respect.

What is misophonia?

Misophonia involves reduced tolerance to particular sounds or things associated with them. A trigger can bring intense anger, disgust or anxiety, with physical reactions such as a racing heart or tension. It goes beyond ordinary annoyance. Quiet sounds can trigger it; experiences vary between people. It can affect relationships, concentration, work and study. [1, 2]

It is different from hyperacusis, where everyday sounds seem unusually loud and may be painful, and tinnitus, which means hearing sounds without an outside source. A person can have more than one. These descriptions are not a diagnostic tool. [1, 3, 4]

Supporting someone

  • Listen and take their distress seriously.
  • Discuss adjustments when everyone feels calm.
  • Agree a discreet signal for needing a break.
  • Never make trigger sounds to test a reaction.
  • Look for arrangements that respect everyone’s needs.

Agreed breaks, seating choices and a communication plan are options to discuss and adapt, not treatments.

Words you could use

“I want to understand what this is like for you. Is there a small change we could try that works for both of us?”

Illustrative wording, not a real person’s story. You can adapt it, and share only what you feel comfortable sharing.

Exploring help in Ireland

A GP can discuss symptoms, their impact and possible referrals. PSI’s Chartered Psychologist directory and IACP’s accredited therapist directory are places to investigate. A listing does not establish misophonia expertise. Specialist care may not be available.
